REC [1-9] (Fin)

(Caught this the other day but didn’t get a chance to write-up anything until now)

I passed this one up when it first came out due to anime overload. While look for more manga to read, I got interested in this one so I figured I’ll catch the anime before I dive into the manga since the anime is so short.

This story was cute. It had a slightly different spin to the typical romantic comedy though it was hardly original. There was a decent amount of story within just a few episodes so it was hard to soak in everything. At times, it felt rushed. There was a hint of slice-of-life in this anime that could’ve been done really well had it been a bit longer.

I couldn’t quite tell if the story was rushed or if it developed this way in the manga. Regardless, the characters developed rather well given such a short amount of time. I mean, not only was this only 9 episodes, each episode was only about 10 minutes long. In essence, this story was told in just 4 and a half episodes, and again, the character development in that short time was impressive.

Aka’s character was fun and easily likable. She could’ve been a really great character if there was more time to flesh her out. Matsumaru was a roller-coaster. The first episode made me think “this guy isn’t bad” then the second episode turned that into “what a fuckin’ loser” and that pattern went on the whole time. I mean, he’s 26, not 18, yet he acted like any other lustful high school kid.

All in all, this was a fun watch. It had the potential to be great but it was just too short. Again, the stories felt rushed but thankfully, it still conveyed a sense of completeness by the end.

Overall series score: 8.1 out of 10
