Manabi Straight! [5]

A whole episode w/o Manabi?

Surprisingly, it was still fun.

Mika is just plain cute. She’s constantly got the neko-ish face going, especially with her mouth, and always busts out those over-exaggerated poses. No matter how forced it may seem, I find it cute. Overly cute.

Mei is a mixed bag. Her tsundere and overly shy side is cute while her iincho and techy side is so-so. The pure fact that she has so many sides only adds to my confusion. Though every story needs someone like Mei to keep things balanced, she has the potential to become a much more interesting character. I’m not too keen on the smarty-pants or nerdy personalities so I’ll have to see how this pans out.

Ya know, that’s three episodes for the school festival. I can’t call this an episodic comedy romp anymore, can I? The slice-of-life vibe is no doubt prevalent as is the comedy but a running story plus more than a few scenes of drama =/= episodic comedy romp. And my (minor) expectations of a bigger story seems more likely.

Yet… I still don’t care. I’m having fun regardless of which direction things are going and this episode held its own despite not having the lead character.

Seriously.

I’m finishing it.

I GARE-RON-TEE it.

Manabi Straight! [3-4]

Drama in my overly cuteness?

Nowai.

Time for the school festival, eh? It wouldn’t be complete w/o one.

So, like, Manabi = pwnt in episode 3. Looks like her energetic self can’t change everyone so easily. Of course, the student council members in the other schools are all raging bitches.

Going back to the drama, these episodes had a decent chunk of it. It’s nothing grand but could prove interesting in the future. For now, it remains an episodic comedy romp. Given some of what went down, I am curious as to how things would pan out if it got more serious.

Then again, why fuck things up? I’m still having fun watching if for no other reason than potentially seein’ some overly cute yuri action. Seriously, there are males in this anime but like, they’re still nonexistent. There’s that one male teacher and the occasional male student. Hell, all the student council members were female. I ain’t trippin’, there’s yuri right around the corner!

I’m diggin’ the intro sequence. The song’s definitely nice while the actual sequence is interesting; it’s different than the usual. Ok ok, it’s also overly cute.

On the flip side, this show has the absolute worst next episode previews EVAR. They spend more time doing that whole set-up sequence for the next episode preview than showing the actual preview.

Aaaand, I finally know where this pic comes from:

It all makes sense now.

Well, no, not really. That didn’t make any sense.

I say this often but seriously… SERIOUSLY… I’m gonna finish this one.

Seriously.

Manabi Straight! [2]

Overly cute. And funny. And a lil teeny bit heartwarming.

Ok, so there’s a few more adjectives I can use.

Even so, “overly cute” remains dominant.

This episode was funnier than the last. I even had a LOLOL moment, when the scene cut to the teacher after he gave the student council 5,000 yen. He’s shown starving and staring at the food of the teacher next to him and that teacher gives him a dirty look and cuddles her food. Hahaha… hilarious.

The animation is pretty solid. More specifically, the “camera work” is interesting. Much of this anime is animated as if there was an amateur videotaping it and there’s also some unique “camera angles.” It adds luster to an otherwise simple anime.

Manabi is great. She’s extremely energetic to the point where it’s so damn cute and that’s her only selling point. Honestly, she doesn’t need anything else. She’s just fun to watch. It’s obvious things will be changing now that she’s at this school so I’m now curious as to how much will change. Is this series meant to be an episodic comedy romp or will a story actually develop beyond this slice-of-life pace? Either works for me as long as the mood isn’t ruined.

On a side note, I’m still trying to figure out why I’m enjoying this. Overly cute shows don’t normally draw me in as the cute antics get annoying over time. Hopefully this one won’t suffer that same fate.

Btw…

Yuri senses tingling (again)!

Ah hahaha, ok, it only looks that way since the caps are taken out of context.

Seriously though, it’s tingling.

Manabi Straight! [1]

Another new series… I should just change the “theme” of this blog from an anime blog to an anime-I-start-but-never-finish blog.

In my defense, this one is overly cute and I kinda like it.

It’s also very cappable. I ended up with nearly 20 caps for this episode. I average around 10 caps per episode for anything I watch though the medium falls closer to 6-8. For some reason, I had so many. Being overly cute might have something to do with it.

Really, it’s overly cute. I have no other adjective for this series. I doubt that’ll change in the future. The plot is simple and very obvious. Instead of subtly laying the groundwork for the MC to change everything around him/her, this one blatantly says that’s what will happen. So, simple and obvious… and could prove more interesting.

The characters are the usual but since this is, ya know, overly cute but not in a kiddy sort of way, there’s a lil extra somethin’ about them. Also, my yuri senses are tingling. I don’t know why but yeah… I’m just puttin’ it out there. Overly cute yuri… or even overly cute shoujo-ai… umm… no comment. Yet.

Horie Yui is a solid VA but she doesn’t have the versatility as many popular VA’s. Her characters are always a great match for her voice and she really does a helluva job. Since she lacks an extensive voice library, does this make her less of a VA? I suppose this sounds like I think all her voices sound the same. The root of all the voices are the same but she does have subtle fluctuations for when she’s being normal or serious or the one I hear most often lately, overly cute.

Ah, that’s just a random comment since all the Hocchan haters use her lack of versatility as ammo. It doesn’t bother me and I like her voice. Plus, her overly cute voice is just so damn overly cute that I can’t hate on it.

I’m sure by now I’ve used “overly cute” way too much. I’m tired so blame that for my lack of vocabulary. I should be watching Code Geass or the Shakugan no Shana movie or even the 8937948273 series’ I’m neglecting but… but… yeah… I think I’ll watch some more of this one.

I R SILLAY.

Oh yeah, and Hayashibara Megumi! I haven’t heard a song by her in quite a while. She has such a peaceful singing voice. I could slowly melt away listening to her singing.
