A real entry will happen later.
For now…
OMG OOTANI IS SO DENSE!
I had to let that out after watching episodes 6 and 7.

Busy lately and when I get some free time, I been reading manga so anime is getting neglected. Part of it is because most of the anime I’m watching doesn’t “grip” me. Several are good and most are fun but none are to the degree where I absolutely have to watch it as soon as I can.
Though, this one might do that.

I felt like mixin’ in some Shoujo into my anime diet so I started this up. With that noted, this show is less “shoujo” than anything else I’ve watched.
This one is directed by the same guy that did One Piece and as such, the style shows, especially in the comedy. The facial exaggerations, the randomness, and various other elements are indeed common between the two. The animation director is also the same and that shows as well.
Hell, Risa’s VA is the same as Nami. Not only that, the character design and personalities have many similarities.
But see, this makes me curious. The One Piece manga was damn near the same as the anime. The style was the same. The anime didn’t incorporate too much more than was in the manga so it’s not like the anime can be credited for using that style.
But what about Lovely Complex? Was the manga really like this anime? Yeah yeah, I can go check it out but I’m having too much fun watching this series. I only took this break to blog it cuz this felt like a good stopping point.
But I digress…
As mentioned, this show is fun. The characters are enjoyable to watch and Risa + Ootani = too much hilarity. Then there’s the effeminate guy liking Risa and a complete girl who’s a guy but he’s totally a she liking Ootani. Along with that and other elements, I’m really enjoying the off-the-wall comedy. Sometimes, I don’t feel I’m watching a Shoujo anime at all.
I like the whole height complex issue. Many anime try to throw in something different to set them apart from the same ol’ but after a few episodes, they lose sight of the one thing that made them different and end up in the same mold. So far, Lovely Complex has made sure to keep the height issue in focus. It’d lose a lot of appeal if it strayed away from that.
The story for these episodes felt like a prequel to the real story. It took 5 episodes for Risa to finally develop and realize that she likes Ootani. So, now that our MC has a love interest, the story can now begin… right? I can only assume as much.
In the end, this is a Shoujo romance anime so I’m sure some drama will kick in eventually. I can feel at ease about any overdone angst given the light-hearted approach to this story so I’m definitely curious on how any serious issues will be portrayed.
Oh, one last note. I don’t think I’ve ever heard so much Kansai dialect before. It’s obvious the setting for Lovely Complex is somewhere in that region and yeah, I’ve never watched anything set in that region. I always found the dialect fun to listen to but wow, this is like total overload, haha.
So far, so good but it’s too early to say if this will become an “OMG A NEW EPISODE I MUST WATCH IT NOW” anime.
It’s got a good shot, though.
