Kanon 2006 – Final Thoughts

Well, what can I say that I haven’t already spewed out in rampant tirades in the past few days?

I very much enjoyed Kanon 2006.

Didn’t expect that, eh? My increasingly disturbing outbursts aside, seriously, I did enjoy it. Extending this series to 24 episodes allowed for more character development and interaction. All the characters were fun to watch and I truly cared for them all by the end. Yes, even Mai. It’s not her character I had an issue with, it was her somewhat contrived story.

Besides Mai’s story, the rest were told well. I especially got into Makoto’s story as it incredibly drew me in. The way her character degraded every scene… that was tough and it really made me feel for her. Shiori’s story was decent. They didn’t overdue her scenes but it was a shame they threw her out so suddenly and left her until the end.

Ayu’s story was heartwarming. Her story could’ve ended in a bittersweet way but they opted for a happy ending. Nayuki’s story was short. Her story intertwined with Ayu’s and as such, she was overshadowed by Ayu. At least she was one of the funnier characters throughout the series, heh.

All together, this was quite an interesting watch and something that’s definitely left a lasting impression on me. I’m glad they decided to remake this series.

Overall series score: 9.0 out of 10

Oh but I can’t just leave it at that. I mean, I broke down my thoughts briefly on each girl’s story so of course, I just have to rate each one. For a show such as this, it’s not hard since each story can essentially stand alone.

Makoto: 9.5
Mai: 7.9
Shiori: 8.5
Nayuki: 8.6
Ayu: 8.9

Or something like that.

Kanon 2006 [24] (fin) (For reals)

So, the world is set right again.

Even Mishio got some love (and friends!).

Well, not everything was quite right.

Ayu’s final wish was for her dearest person to be happy (or something thereof). Yeah, that makes sense. While watching this episode, I couldn’t figure out how everyone suddenly became healed with her wish cuz something like “I want everyone to be healthy” or some silly shit didn’t sound plausible.

But, she wasn’t dead? All this time, she was in a coma. Now all the “I’m dreaming” scenes make sense but I’m not sure if this was the better path to take. As I mentioned, I’m not being malicious… it felt a bit contrived just to have a happy ending. Bittersweet endings can still turn out great.

Ehh… ok. I did enjoy this ending. It felt rocky and some parts, like the whole headband thing, didn’t quite make sense but it’s great that Ayu made it.

We don’t know if she’ll be back to full health again…

…but at least she looks like a boy now.

Hahaha… yes, that was random and senseless. I just liked that scene.

Hmm… Ayu wished for Yuuichi to be happy. Right? Wouldn’t that include Ayu being with him? So, in a sense, her selfless wish could have been indirectly used to heal her as well… interesting…

…but way too much thought for this anime. I should stop.

Wonder what the future may hold for them now.

Oh yeah, what was this about?

What? The tree is growing back so… what? New life? New beginnings? But doesn’t that just mean it’ll kill some other young girl again?

And what’s the deal with showing a fox in the background……… doing nothing? Ok, so most likely it’s suppose to be Makoto but there’s no meaning behind it. Is she alive? Is she protecting the forest? Is this some stupid ploy to “close out” her story… which makes no sense to me.

Geh, I’m thinking too much again. I liked Makoto and she’s the only one that isn’t around anymore. It’s so sad *sniff*

Goodbye again, Makoto.

I hope your smile remains this bright.

Kanon 2006 [24] (fin) (rough draft or something like that)

There’s plenty I want to put down for this last episode but it’s way late. Some good, some bad… some maybe ugly. I’ll sit on my thoughts and go through all this shit tomorrow.

I should note… something.

Ayu’s alive. Obviously my warped mind never deciphered all the “dream” comments so I never considered her still being alive. I’m still wondering if that’s good or not. No, I’m not sadistic. Instead of a bittersweet ending, you get a sweet ending.

Wonder if both endings were in the game…

Alright, more tomorrow.

Kanon 2006 [23]

I don’t know.

I had thoughts on things I wanted to type up after this episode but now that everything is seemingly concluded… I gots nuffin’.

The real Makoto making a very brief appearance was rather random, though.

I won’t complain. It’s nice to know what Makoto might have looked like in her twenties.

And yes, that’s all the screenies I have. I was too busy crying or some shit to take more purdy pictures.

Nayuki just may have been the strongest girl of them all.

Why the fuck won’t they show Shiori.

Maybe Ayu wasn’t an angel but a lost spirit? Wings don’t make sense then unless it’s an extension of the angel doll.

“Oh, it’s nothing.” That line is used way too much in romantic comedies.

I think I’ll stop before I bust out more random single sentence statements that I’ll be confused on when I re-read this tomorrow… even more than I already have, that is.

One last episode… epilogue, I suppose? A long ass epilogue?

Kanon 2006 [22]

So, while Nayuki is slowly degrading…

…Yuuichi has more revelations and chases after a ghost.

Okok, that wasn’t quite accurate but in my head, it sounded like it’d make a good intro.

Well, Ayu’s secret is out. She was an angel all this time (if I literalize her figurative “wings”… or something like that). She was there but never there but what was her purpose? I’m sure it’s got to do with the last wish. Thank god I can’t remember.

My sudden outburst in the previous entry aside, I am quite curious about this outcome and hope it isn’t crappy. Nayuki or Aya… when will the choice be clear?

Ah fuck it, go with Makoto.
